Why Use Limestone
Limestone is very common material in architecture, especially in North America and Europe. Limestone is frequently used on all types of buildings and sculptures. Limestone is relatively easy to cut into blocks, tiles or more elaborate carving. Many landmarks across the world are made of limestone, including the pyramids in Egypt.
The most common color of limestone is beige, with variations that tend to gray and yellow. The grain is generally fine and because this is a material of sedimentary origin, it is not unusual to find fossil materials in it, particulary little shells.
Limestone and marble are very reactive to acid solutions, making acid rain a significant problem. Acid-based cleaning chemicals can also etch limestone, which should only be cleaned with a neutral or mild alkaline-based cleaner.
